The following list of maritime publications is provided for your enjoyment. Most of the books and items listed here are of local maritime interest or have been written by or published by Vancouver Branch members. For a complete listing of books published by members of the World Ship Society, go to worldshipsociety.org and select "Member Publications". The Society does not sell any of the publications listed on this site (except where indicated). Details of availability will be posted in the description of each listing. Any prices listed are presumed current at the time of posting, but may change without notice. To be on the safe side, check with the supplier for exact costs and whether or not prices include postage and packing.

Author Ted Rafuse has srtfully captured the history of the rail car ferries ONTARIO No. 1 and ONTARIO No. 2 which operted out of Cobourg during the first half of the 20th century. The story of this marine operation -- which ferried both coal and passengers -- is brought to life through the recollections of crew and passengers, dozens of photographs and company records. The Buffalo Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway in the United States and the Grand Trunk Railway in Canada together created a marine operation to serve as a link between their two rail lines. "Coal to Canada" traces the story of carrying coal from western Pennsylvania mines to destinations trhoughout central Ontario. Author is not a WSS member, but this book is listed as an item of interest. Two colour cover, 96 pages. 105 b&w captioned photos, several diagrams, and 3 maps. 8½ inches x 11 inches. Softcover.

The book deals with the Canadian shipbuilding effort, in what can only be described as a prodigious industrial achievement during both world wars in constructing fleets of merchant ships to counter the effects of the U-boat campaign. Ships were built in substantial numbers in Vancouver, Victoria, Prince Rupert and Eastern Canada. After each war significant numbers of vessels were sold to Canadian shipping companies and operated on world trade routes. The background and make-up of each war's shipbuilding program and individual ship types are described. Every ship built is listed.

The history of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company can be found in considerable detail elsewhere, in many forms and publications. This aspect of its corporate life is, however, unique in that it bears on its maritime operations on Canada's West Coast and is based on original sources. Dr. Lamb's personal knowledge and association with the men, women and ships of the fleet extends back to those who were participants in the establishment of the service.
