This is the fourth in the "West Coast Maritime Series". After WWII the big companies became more venturesome with offshore tows to Hawaii and California, into the Arctic, the North Sea and Red Sea. The Slvage tows of disabled vessels from the North Pacific are detailed. This quickly expanded to tows of obsolete vessels to Japan and then major tows of barges loaded with drill rigs around the world. It was a business which grew with the growth of deep-sea oil exploration and then it came to a halt almost as quickly. Oil and operating economics and political considerations resulted in a massive change of direction. West Coast tugs are still taking deep-sea voyages, but it is no longer a business of massive expansion and what remains is now foreign controlled.

A number of excellent small books have been written on the subject of Muskoka steamboating. While of interest, these books merely serve to whet the appetites of historians and steamboat buffs. This is the first thorough account of the scores of steam tugs, yachts, launches and majestic passenger ships that at one time plied the Muskoka and Huntsville Lake systems.
This book, Volume II of a two-volume set, begins its story in 1906, the year that marked the beginning of the Golden Age of Muskoka Steamboating, an age of quiet elegance when the primeval forest gave way to the palatial resort hotel--and the only way to get there was by steamboat.
The zenith of steamboating in the Roaring Twenties, its decline during the Depression, and its eventual demise in the 1950s are documented in a coulourful text and rare historical photographs.
The memory of the Muskoka steamboats has been kept alive by the majestic SEGWUN's restoration and return to operation, and this exciting chapter in steamboat history is also chronicled in this book.
9 inches x 11½ inches. Hard cover. 304 pages. Dust jacket.
