WEBMASTER'S RECOMENDATION While the extent of Canada's war production effort, 1939-45, is fairly well known to Canadians, one aspect of it has largely, and inexplicably, escaped notice. This is the construction in Canadian shipyards, from a standing start in 1941, of 402 merchant ships, most of them 10,000-ton cargo ships. They were launched from seven yards on the west coast and eight on the east coast, St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes. "A Great Fleet of Ships" explains how this potential merchant fleet in being at the war's end was dispersed, so that Canada's merchant marine all but vanished after 1950. Contains a complete Fleet List of all the ships, and a Fold-Out Plan taken from the original plan of the North Sands ship brought over from England in 1940, from which the entire Canadian program for these 10,000-ton ships originated, including the Royal Navy maintenance ships. 312 pages. Hard cover. 9 inches x 11 inches.

Beneath the Surface: Submarines Built in Seattle and Vancouver 1909-1918

Author: Bill Lightfoot, forword by Roland H. Webb
Publication No.: 8507 ISBN: 1-895590-31-0 Publication Date: 2005
THIS IS NOT A WORLD SHIP SOCIETY PUBLICATION AND IS NOT AVAILABLE FROM THE SOCIETY. Published by Cordillera Books, Vancouver, BC, Canada. Publication is available by post from Richmond Book Services, 8415 Granville St, Box 46, Vancouver, BC V6P 4Z9, Canada. Tel: 604.261.1695 / E-mail: richbook@shaw.ca. Available through select maritime book sellers.

This is the fascinating story of the only navy submarines ever constructed on the North Pacific Coast, a story of vision and entrepreneurship, of guts and bravery. Why, where, when, and how did these "technical marvels," these "little divers" these "deathtraps" come into being? What were they like? How were they used and by whom?

Most of the story has never been told. It's a story of Paterson, world famous naval architect and the person chiefly responsible for building them, of the political and strategic climate that brought them here and of Imperial Russia's secret construction in British Columbia. It's the story of contemporary construction methods, of the mechanisms and equipment, of accommodations for living and the way of life aboard these primiteve vessels, of progressive designs and of the unique Chilean boats that so disappointed the Chilean Naval Mission.

The story of operations exposes episodes of daring, adventure, hardship and hazard. One of these submarines became the first submarine loss of the United States Navy and another sank her sister ship, one was dragged overland to be launched anew a second time, five ended up on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Six were disassembled in Vancouver and re-asembled in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, two were spirited away to Canada resulting in considerable political fallout, two, along with two from San Francisco, became the first U.S. Navy vessels to home port in Hawaii. Two became the first British warships to transit the Panama Canal, and six hunted U-boats in the Atlantic. They all challenged the sturdy submariners who volunteered to man them.

325 pages. 8½ inches x 11 inches. Soft cover.
